Honorable George William Wray Porter was born in December, 1862 at Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, the son of Rev. Joseph Wray and Rebecca (Stem) Porter.

After graduating from the Model School at Trenton, New Jersey, he entered Lafayette College and received the A.B. degree from that institution in 1885 and later received the M.A. degree. Thereafter he became a student in the law offices of the old well-known firm of McCarter, Williamson and McCarter of Newark, New Jersey, where he remained from 1885 to 1888. In the latter year he was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey as an attorney and in 1891 as a counselor.

He was managing clerk for the firm of Day and Day for a year or so after being admitted. He was appointed Assistant City Counsel of the City of Newark, New jersey under Joseph Coult, Sr., and served in that capacity for a year. In 1891 he received the appointment as Superintendent of the Martin Act for the purpose of completing title to properties purchased by the city, serving in this special work until 1916. In this year Judge Porter received the appointment as Referee in Bankruptcy. He retired in 1947 having heard more than 9,000 cases.

Judge Porter belonged to the Essex County, new Jersey State, and the American Bar Associations, New Jersey Sons of the American Revolution and National Association of Referees in Bankruptcy.

On September 20, 1890, Mary Guild became his wife. He had three children, Marjorie P., Helen P. and William M.
