Gloria M. Burns

A New Jersey native, Judge Gloria Burns graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1973.  Judge Burns went on to work as a Special Education Teacher in the Maryland school system before returning to New Jersey in 1976 to attend law school.  In 1979, Judge Burns earned her J.D. from Rutgers University Law School in Camden, NJ.  She then worked an associate at Teich, Groh, Robinson, Kline & Frost from 1980-1984—and later as an associate, then partner, at Davis, Reberkenny & Abramowtiz from 1984-1993.  In On February 4, 1993, Judge Burns was sworn-in as bankruptcy judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, in Camden, NJ.  She served for twenty-two years, including several years as Chief Judge, before retiring in May 2015.

In an interview for the publication The Absolute Priority, Judge Burns expressed her passion for public service and told the Lawyers Advisory Committee that serving as a bankruptcy judge gave her “the great enjoyment of being able to assist people financially reorganizing their lives.”
