George J. Bergen

Title: Bankruptcy
Born: May 27, 1871
Birth Place: Camden, NJ
Died: June 5, 1918

Judge Bergen was born in the city of Camden, May 27, 1871, being the son of Christopher A. Bergen and Harriet James Bergen. He descended from an old well-known New Jersey family, whose common ancestor settled, in the early part of the Seventeenth century, on territory now known as Bergen County.

Mr. Bergen prepared for college at the Friends Central School and Rugby Academy in Philadelphia, and entered Princeton College in the Fall of 1887. He graduated from Princeton in 1891, and subsequently received the degree of Master of Arts from that institution. He read law in the office of his father and uncle, Martin V. Bergen, in Camden, and was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey as an attorney in June, 1894, and as a counselor in June, 1897. Upon his admission to the Bar he at once began to practice in Camden and continued actively in his profession until the date of his death. For several years he practiced law with Grover C. Richman, as a member of the firm of Bergen & Richman.

In 1899 Judge Bergen was married to Alice C. Grey, daughter of Attorney General Samuel H. Grey.

From 1898 to 1906 Judge Bergen was a Referee in Bankruptcy. In 1898 he became a solicitor of the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Camden County, and in 1906 was elected solicitor for the Camden Safe Deposit and Trust Company, both of which offices he continued to hold during the remainder of his life.

He died on June 5, 1918 in an automobile accident.
